Critical Analysis

Within the third major assignment we were asked to construct a critical analysis essay. My critical analysis paper argues the supreme courts power over women reproductive rights. The aim of the assignment was to develop a cohesive argument that suits the criteria for this assignment. I was able to offer thoughtful analysis while relating supporting texts back to my primary source.

Reproductive rights can be considered a women’s ownership over her choice of whom, she also can decide if and when she’ll marry, If she may or may not carry a child and how manyshe’ll have, as well as the choice of whether or not have intercourse, A woman’s decision tocontinue or terminate a pregnancy, as well as the right to gain sexual education, and the right tohave access to any necessary medical health services. As a female, these are just a fewfundamental rights that should not be irrefutably granted. However, it’s currently under attackwith restrictions being placed on how freely women can manage their sexuality and reproductivechoices. A solution to help confront and resolve the threat being imposed on women’sreproductive rights is explained in After the Latest Supreme Court Ruling on Abortion, theWomen’s Health Protection Act Is More Important than ever where the author Megan Donovansuggests for congress to lift “oppressive state laws” and lift racist and discriminatory abortioncoverage bans to ensure that women have access to abortion care. Women’s sexual andreproductive rights should be seen as basic human rights to promote a sense of equality andjustice amongst all people no matter their race, gender, or sex. By using Ethos and persuasive language Donovan effectively addresses the issue by showcasing how hostile lawmakers are towards abortion rights and the disparities present in access to safe abortion. Taking everything into account it is clear that this issue won’t be resolved overnight however effort must be made to ensure women’s fundamental rights are no longer at stake.

The article “Why Do Politicians Still Force Women Through Unwanted Pregnancies?”written by Billie Miller who is the minister of health in the parliament of Barbados and shediscusses her efforts towards “ decriminalizing abortion”. These clever language choicesthroughout Miller’s article can make it safe to assume that Miller utilized pathos as her maintechnique of persuasion in her article. This was evident in this small excerpt from millers articleWhen governments deny women access to safe and legal abortion, it does nothing to decrease therate at which abortions occur. Instead, it leads to more injuries and deaths.” Miller not onlydepicts a serious tone through her thought choice of words but effectively shares the grim realityof what these restrictions on women’s rights implemented by the government can lead to. Inefforts to evade more casualties, Miller reveals that she heavily relies on the persuasion of othermembers of the parliament including her fellow male politicians to successfully advancelegislation that made abortions legal under certain circumstances in Barbados. Miller helpsreaders understand that before the legalization of abortions in Barbados there was a major healthcrisis regarding unsafe abortion practices that’s resulted in the deaths of many women in the pastand within the article, she’s incorporated an urgent tone and strategic word choices tosuccessfully deliver her message. Overall this article aids in the comprehension of the negativeimpact illegal abortion laws had on women and the devastating loss of life that follows.

This article titled “ Why Reproductive Rights matter in an open society” written by Rachel’sheart targets a few of the many reasons why women’s reproductive rights should be protected. The heart structures her article in a format by sharing stories of real women’s experiences withabortions in different countries around the world and the hardship women undergo for seekingsafe pregnancy termination. By sharing stories Heart successfully delivers her message byplaying on the emotions of her readers much like Miller and Donovan. In the article, heartutilizes a critical tone to draw a sense of urgency to her message. This was evident when sheused phrases like “ women engaged in sex work or who use drugs, and women living withHIV—are most at risk of having their reproductive rights infringed upon. Human rightsorganizations need to be engaged in efforts to protect women’s reproductive rights.” The heartuses sex workers and female drug addicts as a prime example of women who may need helpadvocating for their reproductive rights. Despite the fact of these women’s background orsocioeconomic status they remain as women who live everyday lives whom the readerthemselves might have even passed by which dissolve the idea that this issue is only affecting aselect group of women and creates a deep connection between the reader and the reality that is anissue is a danger to women as a whole population.

Any choice a woman makes cornering her brown body should be up to her discretion, however, all across the world women have faced many hardships when making personal choices. Thearticle written by Julie Rovner briefly talks about the death of Ruth Bader Ginsburg who recentlyheld a position as a U.S Justice. According to the language in the article, it was clear thatGinsburg was a fierce advocate and fought diligently to protect women’s health rights. This canbe evident in the article “Ginsburg had been a stalwart supporter of reproductive freedom forwomen. In her nearly three decades on the court, she always voted with backers of abortionrights and birth control and led the dissenters in 2007 when the court upheld a federal ban on aspecific abortion procedure.” Within that small excerpt of the article it proves the deep passion.Ginsburg had towards protecting women’s reproductive rights but sadly after her passing, shewas replaced with a new justice Amy Barrett who seems to have less concern over women’shealth rights and more interest in formulating new laws to gain control over women and theirrights. Rovene uses a concerning tone to give off the sense of importance her article has achievedby alarming the readers how reproductive rights can affect women’s freedom as they know it andhow imperative it is for women to maintain ownership of their reproductive right because for awoman to truly understand her worth she must be able to own every percentage of her body.

Women’s reproductive rights are being threatened by oppressive policies implemented by thesupreme court that aim to limit women’s reproductive freedom. The article After the LatestSupreme Court Ruling on Abortion, the Women’s Health Protection Act Is More Important thanever written by Megan Donovan, conveys the best way to protect women and their reproductiverights is to fight to ensure equal reproductive justice and freedom by “discarding all laws that thesupreme court released to hold authority over women’s reproductive rights”. Another way toprotect women’s reproductive rights is by protecting women in their workplace and the streets sothat women stay in control of the choices they want to make regarding their bodies. Women willnever truly be seen as equals to other genders if they don’t have full control of their bodies. Thisis why women must maintain full custody of their reproductive rights, because it’s essential totheir fundamental rights, and what’s at stake is simply invaluable.

To conclude Donovan has crafted a clear message which is that access to safe abortion services will only be possible if lawmakers enact policies that ensure everyone has the option to freely seek affordable health care services and information without hindrance or being “Criminalized”. Readers are persuaded to agree with Donovan’s views on women’s reproductive rights through her thoughtful choice of words, serious tone, effective language, and a clever utilization of pathos. Donovan’s readers are slapped with the reality of how detrimental oppressive abortion laws can be to women’s reproductive freedom.

ReflectionAfter completing my final version of my paper I can truly say the hardest part of this entire process was my time management. I tried to look for the best possible articles that would be coherent with my proposed thesis. However this process took way longer than expected, and I realized this when I was going through dozens of pages of google searches for about an hour and a half mainly researching articles about women’s reproductive rights which were highly time-consuming and resulted in me rushing to construct my rough draft. When the time was drawing near to submitting the final version of the paper I worked diligently to ensure that my 3 chosen articles would provide evidence that could blend seamlessly with my thesis statement. I usually struggled with analyzing text in the past so I knew this would also be an area to focus on when composing this paper. At first, I was constructing the paper in the format of a research paper and had to re-write my initial theme which was originally focusing on the importance of women’s reproductive rights rather than the impending control the supreme court currently withholds over women’s reproductive rights. I was however able to still work with my initial 3 chosen articles. I choose to critically analyze the article After the Latest Supreme Court Ruling on Abortion, the women’s Health Protection Act Is More Important than ever where the author Megan Donovan was able to bring a spotlight on the endangerment of women’s reproductive rights due to the belligerent laws being passed by the U.S. Supreme court. This article essential helped to show how the laws being passed by the supreme court were affecting women’s ability to seek a safe abortion and limit their access to health care services and information. Towards the end of the article, the authors propose various solutions to resurrect women’s reproductive rights across the globe that are currently being undermined and undervalued. In the age of the 21st-century technology is a predominant part of society and with a lot of information available a few clicks away it wasn’t very hard to get withhold various useful articles regarding the topic of women reproductive rights, however, it was truly startling to realize how determined the issue is. Analyzing and reading these sources helped me to understand how many women have affected by these laws and the power it holds over their bodies. After deeply analyzing Donovan’s language and technique choices throughout the article, it helped me to take a look further into my thesis to more accurately depict the grim reality of this issue. To conclude this paper has made me more aware of how my choices as a writer can determine how successful the deliverance of my message is to my intended audience. I have gained the ability to read, analyze and relate 3different texts to a common thesis. And determine the different factors that made each article successful in delivering its message which is a skill that will be useful for future reference.
